Southern Indiana’s newest outdoor gem is beginning to take shape—and steps! The Monon South Trail is now partially open and offers more than 20 miles of scenic pathways, perfect for a day of walking, running, or cycling. The trail is a developing rails-to-trails project spanning multiple counties and bringing communities together along the way. Whether you’re on wheels or feet, the Monon South Trail is quickly becoming a hub of recreation, wellness, and connection, and you’re invited to join!

A Trail for Everyone
All for one and one for all, this trail was built with accessibility and versatility in mind. Along the route, you’ll find two types of trail surfaces: a paved, smooth asphalt surface and a crushed aggregate surface across longer connecting stretches. Both provide smooth, rideable paths that can accommodate a wide range of users.
Whether you’re walking the dog, pushing a stroller, or enjoying a weekend bike ride, the trail offers an accessible, comfortable, and welcoming experience. There are clear markings, wide paths, and minimal elevation changes, ideal for those who want to experience the outdoors with a scenic route away from vehicle traffic.

Community in Motion
One standout community along the trail is Orleans, where residents have embraced the trail with weekly movement and momentum. Every Tuesday, locals lace up and gather for the MOOvers Walking Club hosted by Hometown Scoops. The group starts and ends their walk at the ice cream shop, and as a sweet reward, participants are treated to a free scoop of ice cream at the finish. This club is a casual walking group that turns the trail into a social stroll, blending both fitness and community spirit. It is a great example of how the trail is encouraging movement and fostering new social traditions together.
Beyond just walking, the trail also hosts several organized 5Ks along different sections. It attracts hundreds of participants across Southern Indiana and beyond. There are so many neighboring regions along the trail. Check to see if yours is just a hop, skip, or jump away here.
As you’re exploring the trail, if there are times you want to take a rest, hydrate, or use the restroom, there are plenty of opportunities throughout the trail. The trailheads (which will open in September) are color-coded and break down where you can find exactly what you’re looking for.

A Trail with a Vision
While only partially complete, the Monon South Trail is already serving as a connector and linking people to the outdoors, to neighbors, and to new destinations across Southern Indiana. As the trail continues to grow, so do the opportunities to explore and experience the region. Whatever your exercise looks like, the Monon South Trail invites you to be a part of its journey.
