McCormick's Creek State Park 🥾🥾
After experiencing significant tornado damage in late March of 2023, McCormick's Creek State Park has begun its journey of recovery, with Trail 5 now welcoming visitors back to witness both nature's power and resilience. Known for shorter interconnected trails that form a wilderness tour, this park offers a unique opportunity for winter explorers to observe the forest restoration process firsthand. Wander along the scenic paths, where frosty waterfalls and snow-dusted trees create a serene winter escape. This season brings an exciting bonus for hikers: the horse trail, typically restricted to equestrian use, is now open to pedestrians.
Hoosier National Forest and Hemlock Cliffs 🥾🥾🥾
Located within the expansive Hoosier National Forest near English, Indiana, Hemlock Cliffs is one of Southern Indiana’s top hiking spots year-round. The sandstone cliffs and narrow passageways take on an almost mystical quality when sprinkled with snow. Nearby, the forest’s Two Lakes Trail offers serene lakeside views, and Buzzard Roost features breathtaking winter vistas of rolling hills and valleys. Keep an eye out for winter wildlife along the trails, such as deer or birds, which are more active during the quieter season.
Martin State Forest 🥾
For those seeking a calm, family-friendly hike, Martin State Forest offers accessible trails ideal for winter walks. This hidden gem is a haven for nature lovers looking to escape into a cozy, woodsy setting. The forest features two main trails: a shorter 1.5-mile loop that’s great for a quick winter outing and a more extensive 5.7-mile loop for those wanting a longer, immersive experience. Enjoy the evergreen-covered forest and scenic lake views, which look even more charming under a layer of frost.
Shakamak State Park 🥾🥾
Shakamak State Park is known for its peaceful lakes and winter trails are perfect for reflective hikes. The park is home to three of the top bird-watching trails in Jasonville, drawing birdwatchers year-round. In winter, you’ll have the chance to spot vibrant cardinals, blue jays, goldfinches, and more as they stand out against the scenery. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars for a bit of winter birding and a closer look at the many species that make Shakamak their winter home!
Each of these trails offers a unique way to enjoy Southern Indiana's winter beauty. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking to spend a peaceful day outdoors, there’s something for everyone!
